It’s a long weekend in the U.S. (Memorial Day). But since the restrictions have been just recently relaxed, I expect a lot of people attempting to get out to somewhere. So, other than short trips out to meet with friends or get a walk somewhere else than around where we live, for the most part of it I plan to stay close to home and do some damage shopping online. Probably not for perfume, but shopping is on my mind – hence the question.
Saturday Question #66:
What Three Perfumes Will You Repurchase?
We are not talking about the situation where you lost your whole collection and need to restart it. These are not necessarily the top three perfumes that you will always have in your collection. Selecting three, you do not limit yourself or preventing any further purchases, so you do not have to be creative with your math. Just think about your current collection and name any three perfumes that you currently own as a bottle (FB or travel bottle but not decant or mini) and think you will repurchase when/if you finish the current one.
Just to introduce some limitations: do not include those perfumes for which you already have back-up bottles.
My Answer
Today’s topic wasn’t the one I initially planned to do this week. But as I was dressing up to go to the friends’ place for dinner (what a luxury to be able to make plans on a short notice, not thinking about who was in contact with whom in the last two weeks!), without thinking for too long, I picked up perfume to wear – Lieber Gustav by Krigler. I looked at my 50 ml bottle that was just about half-full and immediately thought that despite the steep price I knew already that I would buy the next bottle once the remaining half was gone. I love-love-love Lieber Gustav, probably not less than I did six years ago when I told the story about it in the post In the Search for the Perfect Lavender).
From there I started thinking about other perfumes that I’m not hoarding (yet?) but would definitely buy as soon as I finish the bottle I have (or even before that).
Chanel No 19 EdT was the first perfume from Chanel that I fell in love with. It is not my most favorite perfume, and I’m not prepared to build up a stash (maybe because it doesn’t feel rare or inaccessible), but I know that I always want to have it in my collection, so I will repurchase it whenever I finish the bottle I have (though, for this one I might try looking for a vintage one if I don’t like the current version at the moment).
And the third one is Tea for Two by L’Artisan Parfumeur (my story here: Tu-ti-tu-rum-tu-tu or Musical Perfume). I find it somewhat demanding, so I don’t wear it too often. But every time I do, I think how interesting and special Tea for Two is. I would be very sad if I couldn’t have it in my life. But a back-up bottle doesn’t make sense with how infrequent I wear it.

Right now I can’t think of any. I’m working my way through my collection and have thunked maybe 10+ bottles since January. I plan on continuing this way for a while. No new purchases or repurchases for me.

Cassie, love, with all the expenses this year I cannot justify any new purchases of anything. I’m on a strict no buy. Right now all I buy is food and gas for my car, both of which have increased expedientially in the past few months. So I am enjoying my collection and thunking away. Anything that I feel needs to be saved I leave about 5 ml and mail to my dear friend who doesn’t thunk anything. She stores in her beautiful armoire in a cool place.

And meant to say that my consumption of food hasn’t increased but rather the cost of both food and gas have increased thanks to inflation. This is what happens when you comment at 4 am ;)

I’m sorry you are in the strict “no buy” state and hope that it will pass, and your situation improves to the state where you’re choosing to buy or not to buy something frivolous (as the opposite to have to do that).

Wow, Brigitte!!! Congrats on your decision…or should I say on your willpower? I’m in the same mood as you during the past few months and I really resist buying anything new before I finish at least 5 bottles or decants. That’s what I decided. Being a member of more fragrance groups surely does not help but I’m not ready to go too far. I support you and hope all is well at your side of the world :-)

I have some trouble imagining a day when I will actually use something up! Particularly this year when I’m wearing something different every day. However, as an exercise, I have a couple of perfumes that I would not want to be without – two for fall/winter, one for spring/summer. Ormonde Woman (but I was gifted the largest bottle last fall, so that will never happen); Nicolaï Sacrebleu Intense (I have a 30ml so potential) and Chanel Paris-Deauville (also small bottle so could potentially need to replace). All three are “no brainer” perfumes for me – something I can grab and wear regardless of mood or occasion.

You should have bought the 4.2 oz of Paris Deauville…more cost effective and you will never run out!
The year that I decide to break my no buy that might be my one and only purchase. I agree, extremely versatile and I could see it as a year round signature scent for someone.

I understand what you mean. Most of my bottles will probably spoil before they run out. But these three… When I have about 10 ml left in the bottle, I’ll start worrying.

Parfums MDCI Fêtes Persanes, Profumum Roma Vanitas and Tauer Au Coeur du Désert would be my three today. All are loves that I could see myself repurchasing in the unlikely event I run out.

I’m not familiar with the first two, but as ti Tauer’s… Those several that I have are so potent that I will be surprised if I ever finish any.

Hmm, I just can’t even imagine emptying a bottle at the moment, something I’m not proud to admit! I am actually in the process of culling through some of my older bottles that never see any wear and selling a few on Ebay, or giving them to my daughters. I would like to get to the point where I can more easily reach for those scents I really love, so I am not in the mindset to rebuy anything.

These days I’m very curious about new perfumes, but mostly for the testing purposes, I rarely discover anything that I feel I really want.

The same thought crossed my mind when I reached the halfway point of my 15-mL bottle of Hongkong Oolong (from the Nez 1+1 limited edition), which is how I found out that it had disappeared from everywhere. I started collecting perfumes only 2.5 years ago so most bottles are still pretty full, so it’s hard to say, but I would probably replenish Parfum d’Empire Osmanthus Interdite, Le Labo Ylang 49, and Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio.

It is an extremely unpleasant realization that something you like a lot is not available any longer – and you didn’t even realize that it was happening! This is how some of us end up with back-up bottles :)

I’m very near finishing my bottle of CHANEL Boy and it is getting less wear lately because I don’t want to be without it. I’m pretty sure it will be a rebuff.
I will definitely rebut Rahel by Neela Vermeire Creations when my last drops are gone. Probably before TBH.
Not really sure about my third. Problem is, if I love it then there’s probably at least one back up of it here already.

That’s totally fine! Being content with one’s collection (including all the necessary backups) is a great place to be.
Will revisit Chanel Boy tomorrow: I’m always curious when one of my friends feels that pationate about perfume I didn’t pay enough attention to.

Funny thing about BOY is that I don’t feel passionate about it at all. I like it and it fits the days I have no idea what to wear, the days I’m going to be in close quarters, and the days that I want to wear something beautiful but as comfortable as my favourite jeans.

I will never run out of R&C. And when CF is gone it is gone. Nothing lasts forever in life and that is totally fine.

Since we’re talking not about a backup bottle but about the future replenishment, I’m not sure that “gone is gone” and “forever” part really applies here. If you run out of bread or coffee, you don’t stop eating/drinking them, right? You go and buy the next batch. Or switch to tea. So, probably it means that you just don’t like CF enough to want more – and that it totally fine.

No. Not really quite that. I have never in my life had a back up bottle, just saying.) True regarding bread and coffee, as I cannot live without them, coffee at least, but I have no perfumes that I could not live without. At least that has not happened yet. And yes, when this CF is gone, it IS
gone forever, as the newer and current versions do not come close. And gone is good, because searching for what was is useless, and not the way I am wired. Probably why I never went down any vintage path. But, maybe if I was younger I would think different. My daughter is running out of the PoaL I gave her, and she will absolutely wanna replace it. Talking of coffee——- xxx

I see. Yes, that I understand. I wouldn’t want to replace some of my favorites with what they become. But for those I did get backup bottles (not too many but still). Everything else will get a proper place in my memory, but I’m not prepared for vintage disappointments :)
Speaking of coffee… I need to order the next batch before I ran out of the last pack – or I will suffer. Let’s see if I can do it from my phone now before I forget again.

Nothing for a while, largely because 1) I already have backups of a few I never want to be without (Chanel No. 22, No. 19, Cristalle, Penhaligon’s Ostara); 2) I’m working my way through what has become a large collection; and 3) I’m focusing on samples I have, so I can blog about them!

Yes, sampling usually occupies some time (and budget) that otherwise would have contributed to using up favorite perfumes and anxiety related to the less than comfortable level of those that remains in bottles.

I do need to repurchase Jo Malone’s Wild Bluebell as I’ve run out. I’m not even close to running out any others in my collection but I suppose if I was close to running out of any, I’d consider repurchasing Omnia Crystalline by Bvlgari or California Clementine by Atelier.

With Jo Malone – Bllomingdales has 15% off (Memorial Day sale). If not now, you should wait for one of the next sale either from Sephora, Nordstrom, Macy’s or NM – they all started having 10-20% off from time to time.

I bought Backups already of L Air de Rien, because its discontinued and of Aromatics Elixir because i fear reformulation . I think i would buy Fils de Dieu again, if my bottle will get low.

I think that if someone likes any of the modern/new perfumes, it makes sense to buy a back-up bottle soon after the first bottle purchase: it feels like companies keep silently reformulating their perfumes every couple of years.

I’m about to buy a new Mon Guerlain EDP as I just recently ran out. So that’s the first one. Next would be Chanel Jersey and Chanel Deauville. I ran out of Deauville and I miss it so much. Need another! I could never be without Chanel Jersey pure parfum. Same with Guerlain Angelique Noire.

I was curious: when did you try Angelique Noir at a store last? I have a decant from about 5 years ago, I think, and I’m afraid this perfume has been reformulated since then (but I haven’t tried it recently).
With Chanel you should plan your purchase carefully! Since Chanel is almost never on sale, you should time it to some of the gift card events or at least GWP (again, not from Chanel but from the store).

Oh this is funny – I was going to suggest a twist on this question to you for the Saturday spot – “Which perfume would you love to repurchase but can’t really justify the expense?” I was thinking how much some niche scents had gone up in price since I bought my original bottle. And my top answer is PG Brulure de Rose! But I shan’t be re-buying it in the terms of your question, because I cannot justify the purchase of even my favourite scents when I have so very much to use up. But assuming I **was** going to actually buy them, Bvlgari Black would be another, and Songes of course. ;)

I keep forgetting to use Bvlgari Black! Since the box is transparent, I hide it… somewhere :) So, I forget to wear it in the appropriate time of the year.

I’m so tired of my favourite perfumes being discontinued or butchered with new formulations that I’d rather work on my attitude towards perfume. I think it will be easier. I’ll try to adopt Cookie Queen’s attitude.
There is one perfume I plan to buy again though, and since it is from the US it is always rather costly and more complicated to order it to Europe. It’s Charenton Macerations’ Christopher Street. It’s a 30 ml bottle and I’m down to some 5 ml and I don’t want to lose it ever.

I’m late to the party and have no answer! But…I have 3 new perfumes I want to buy at some point: Papillon Spell 125, Twilly Eau de Ginger and whatever fragrance Hiram Green is debuting on the 4th 😆.
