I hope you all survived well the outages caused by CrowdStrike’s issues. From what I read, it wasn’t the best day for air travel (and many other activities). Let’s hope life goes back to normal over the weekend.
Saturday Question #223:
What Is the Best Perfume Created by a Store?
Do you have in your collection perfumes created by/for perfume stores? What is your favorite? Did you buy it at that store?
My Answer
For many years, I didn’t like the idea of perfumes created by perfume boutiques. My thought process was that those stores should be in the business of curating existing perfumes from other brands rather than commissioning their own perfumes. I tried perfumes from 4 or 5 stores, but the only brand that impressed me was Aedes de Venustas, and the only perfume that joined my collection so far was Cierge de Lune. So, this is my answer for today’s question.
How about you?

OOOOOHHHH! Good question Undina.
Just to be clear we are talking about perfume creatively directed by a Jovoy, Min NY, Aedes de Venustas etc. rather than getting a few of their favourite perfumers together to do exclusive runs like LuckyScent or American Perfumer? Yeah?
In which case I also have an Aedes de Venustas bottle, Copal Azur. It’s a salty incense with amber base. Very cool. Mine is also in the original bottle.

Yes, I was thinking about those “created by” not “curated by.”
I thought that most of AdV’s perfumes were good. I liked the iris one also. Haven’t tried any after the repackaging though: I am sure they were reformulated, so I am not eager to confirm that.

Also those new bottles are not nearly as interesting.

I love the Aedes collection and own several. I can’t really think of others right now.

Have you tried any of them in the new bottles? I’m slightly curious how much different they are.

I haven’t tried any of the new bottles to compare.

Hello!
My answer is going to be a stretch-the only fragrance I have that’s commissioned by a store is Bulgari Black. I would have said their green tea fragrance, but that wasn’t commissioned for them-but Black was, I believe.
I always look forward to the Saturday Question-thank you, as always, for making me think :)
Hope everyone’s weekend is excellent, complete with a few moments of peace :)
Sincerely,
Carole

Sorry, I didn’t get it. What store did commission Bvlgari Black? (Good perfume!)

To be fair, I haven’t seen or tried many perfumes that fit this description. Several from Jovoy’s own line are quite good, and the one that lingers in my memory as a potential wish list item is Gardez-Moi. If we include their other line Jeroboam, the leathery, musky Vespero is among my top favorites.

My visit to Jovoy wasn’t the most inspiring, so I think that put me off testing their own perfumes.

Was that in Paris or London? I haven’t been to the one in Paris, but my visit to the London one was great, probably because I was early in my exploration of perfumery and the SA there was very knowledgeable, not pressuring at all, and very generous with samples (many of which were from their own brand). This was back in 2019.

It was in Paris. They didn’t pressure me. But getting a sample was like proverbial squeezing water from a stone. And that was after I bought a bottle!

That’s too bad! I wonder why they were so stingy.

Hard to answer this one, the only perfumes I have even tried are the Arielle Shoshana Saturday and Sunday. I prefer the passion fruit Saturday over the matcha tea Sunday. Apparently she now has Friday and Monday, I don’t keep up!

I tried only Saturday. But since it wasn’t love, I didn’t keep up with newer releases. If I ever come across the brand in a store, I’ll make sure to try them all. But I won’t be buying samples.

What a great question! Is it limited to perfume stores? If so, I’d probably go with one of Jovoy’s fragrances, though I’d have to retry my samples to decide which. If other stores qualify, I’d probably recommend Zara’s Rose Petal Drops, one of its collaborations with Jo Malone. So pretty and so affordable!

I missed that Zara collaboration, but I remember that you liked at least some of those.

I did! And they were cheap as chips, so no harm in a blind buy, plus they came in nice small sizes and there was a discovery set.

I tried a couple of the Aedes de Venustas fragrances and liked them, ditto for a couple of fragrances by Jovoy, but didn’t find anything I absolutely had to have.

The longer we’re collecting perfumes, the harder it gets to justify adding more perfumes.

I treated myself to a couple of the Sentire x Sainte Cellier, Smoked Plum Tea & Tobacco Sun. I’ve written about both.
Sentire was created in Kyiv in 2017 by Nata Dyshliuk, the perfumer & her partner. They came to the UK due to Putin’s invasion. After an introduction to Brooke Belldon, the owner of Sainte Cellier, an online perfumery & the outcome was four perfumes. The two I own as well as English Garden & Atelier 14

How interesting! On my last visit to Ukraine, I hoped to find and test any of the local perfumes – but it didn’t happen. I will check out your posts about the brand.

I can’t relate to this question, sorry, though I vaguely remember our fellow blogger Ari Weinberg setting up a store and then creating some perfumes?

Yep, she did. I bought a sample and tried the first one, but it wasn’t for me (not bad, just not interesting enough). After that there were 2 or 3 more, but since she’s not “one of us” any longer, I didn’t feel obligated to try those just to support her.
