Saturday Question: Love Rules? Love Stinks?

I admit, the title is kind of a clickbait. Not that my regular readers need to be specifically enticed to participate in the SQ post, but I thought it would be a good playful way to pose a question related to a Valentine’s Day celebration.

While cooking our celebratory dinner, I decided to put on some music. Since I haven’t planned anything in advance, and I know my usual Italian Cooking Pandora channel by heart, I decided to check if my Sonos could offer anything occasion-appropriate. I checked, and there they were, two playlists – Love Rules and Love Stinks. And that gave me this idea.

Saturday Question #253:

Do You Celebrate Valentine’s Day?

If yes, how? If no, why? Do you have special perfume(s) you wear on that day?

My Answer

We usually celebrate Valentine’s Day. We try not to participate in the organized part of it (other than using some decoration, themed napkins, etc.), but we cook something special, dress up and watch something romantic. And I always wear Annick Goutal Rose d’Amour. This year’s celebration was dampened by both of us being slightly sick. But we still managed to enjoy it. And my vSO spontaneously complimented me on my perfume (which was a miracle because even when not sick, he usually can’t smell what I’m wearing).

How about you?

  1. Sorry to read you both were under the weather Undina. Bummer.
We don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day other than saying Happy Valentine’s Day to each other.
Jin took me out for dinner on the Monday and Thursday before, just us. Chatting, eating and drinking. We didn’t dress up but both wore shoes and collars on Monday, when we’d rather be in singlets and thongs (flip flops).

On the Friday we invited two of our besties who are singles and we cooked them Korean BarBQ on the outside Hibachi. We bought them some very ‘them’ specific presents, nothing lavish but obviously chosen for them. It was a really beautiful way to spend the night with people we love.

So we aren’t really romantic but we do love each other and our friends. Every day is like Valentine’s Day in our place, we really try to make it so.

  2. DH & I rarely make a big deal of SVD. More a kiss & wishing each other HVD on waking. Nothing proves you love someone more than a morning breath kiss! Hehehe
This year I got my wish as DH got his treatment with only a two day delay rather than the two week delay last time.
So my VD was spent with Mr Jarvis Cockapoo after his groom & sonic teeth cleaning appointment. I was both fragrance & makeup free & did some housework whilst the dog away was being pampered!

  3. We didn’t do anything to celebrate the day this year. We both had a busy day. I even forgot to put wear my heart pendant. If the day falls on a weekend we usually have dinner with friends. I can’t be bothered with booking a restaurant as it’s usually a bit hectic and rushed in most places. We did have a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates though.

  4. It sounds like your SVD was enjoyable nonetheless, Undina. Nice choice in perfume for the day.

There was no special celebration to report. I had to work, then enjoyed a nice dinner, and of course, made sure I had the usual SVD card ready to surprise. Well, not much of a surprise after 38 years.

I chose Opium Pour Homme EDT by YSL. Why? Because I love it! And since it was a day of love, it seemed appropriate.

  5. Sorry to hear that you and you vSO are a bit under the weather. It’s going around, as I am dealing with a cold myself. In years past, my vSO and I would generally celebrate with a home cooked meal rather head out to an overly priced, busy restaurant. We’d generally cook something a little more fancier than normal. Gifts were kept to a minimum- a card and some chocolate maybe. My vSO passed away in December so thus Valentine’s Day I am enjoying a few days in Healdsburg at my parent vacation home. Historically, no specific perfume for the day – just whatever I feel like wearing.

Happy Belated Birthday to you Undina.

  6. We usually do funny cards and we’ll have a special dinner that we make together or I’ll make a special dessert. This year it was cards and a dark chocolate torte that my husband loved.

    Perfume was Ormonde Jane Ta’if

  7. Sorry to hear you were both under the weather for Valentine’s, but it looks like you overcame that and had a good time, and smelt very fragrant with it.

I shared a supermarket “Valentine’s meal for two” deal with a friend who lives in the next street. She brought me flowers. ;)

  8. We do celebrate, but not in a big way. Our celebration is much like yours: a nice dinner at home, nice bottle of wine. My dear husband usually “gives” me a perfume I bought myself, lol. We always exchange cards, and I mail cards to our kids. This year, we watched Moonstruck, which we saw in the theater on our second date! Still such a great rom com.
