Bloom Where You’re Planted

GAH! I’m caught with my pants down ULGers. Why Bloom Where You’re Planted? Well I was reading March’s Moving On post of Perfume Posse while having a late morning congratulations on getting so much done already today cuppa… I do it at 11.30am when I’ve been a good drone and got shitloads done. 30 minutes on the computer just doing some catching ups, reading a blog or two and commenting. It’s a perfect breather so I can go back, do 12-1pm more work with renewed vigour and then quit for lunch hour. The reason I’m giving you a rolling conmentry from my mind is that I just realized it’s my day to write on ULG and I’d completely forgotten. There’s a half written piece on the updated Bull’s Blood by Imaginary Authors but it’s not finished and I just don’t have the bandwidth today to get it done. I’m trying to get all the bank statements together for last years tax, pay all the bills, fold the washing and get ready for work tonight. Suddenly I remembered. CRAP! So, instead of a piece dedicated to a perfume you’re getting a snapshot of my life and some perfumes that have been getting a spritz lately..

Bloom Where You’re Planted

Yeah, I know. I’m starting to be a Hallmark card. Bloom Where You’re Planted! It’s so tired but when you ignore how often you’ve heard or seen it and how condescending it can feel then I love what it says. Bloom Where You’re Planted. It’s more than “Make the best of a bad situation” or “Lemonade from lemons”. It’s like, find a way to flourish and be your best you no matter where you find yourself. Anyway it speaks to me. Maybe because it’s the way I try to be.

So what have I been spritzing?

Iris Rebel by Atelier Cologne

Cold, rooty, slightly doughy iris. It’s transiently gorgeous before becoming a quiet wash of earthy woodiness. An easy wear that feels so cool.

Midnight Fantasy by Britney Spears

Fruity floral banger with a sticky vanilla baseline. It’s like a Christmas rom-com. Awful but so good and so easy to wear.

Ombre Indigo by Olfactive Studio

A blue metallic amber that whispers salt. Nothing I own hits the same spot. If you’re looking for a cozy cuddle of an amber then look elsewhere.

Rahele by Neela Vermeire Creations

Osmanthus done in a leathery style with backup fruits and other florals that ends up a smooth glasslike leather, so shiny you can see your reflection in it..

What do you think when you hear or see Bloom Where You’re Planted? What have you been spritzing lately?

PS: Just so you know, I completed this post in under 25 minutes. Back to work. See you in a fortnight with Bull’s Blood.

  1. Hi Portia, I understand you totally. It’s the time of the Lunar Eclipse, a time to relax, unwind, let yourself go…ok, to bloom where you’re planted as well.

You mentioned Iris Rebel by Atelier Cologne and I was wondering whether it is discontinued or not. I think they have reduced their line significantly. Such a pity. And Rahele, I should revisit it, thanks for reminding me.

I was wearing Alaia recently becaus it made me feel glamurous and I needed that. I also reached out for Galop d’Hermes more often.

  2. I’ll see your “Bloom Where You’re Planted” and counter with “Just Do It”.
Your Just Do It writing this worked a treat! I like peeping into what other people’s lives are like unfiltered, when the glare of social media is turned off.
I often write alitykescents whilst Mr Jarvis Cockapoo & I are curled up in bed wearing matching pj’s

  3. I actually hadn’t seen that phrase in a long time so it spoke to me as well. Easier said than done (another cliché)! I still need to try Rahele. It sounds perfect the way you describe it.

  4. The recent Lunar Eclipse + full Moon have an impact on all of us. It’s a time to relax, be still and contemplate, come in touch with our feelings.

I love it that you mentioned Iris Rebel and I wonder if it is still in production. Atelier Cologne have discontinued some really nice perfumes.

I’ve been wearing Alaia and Galop d’Hermes a lot recently.

  5. I’m not sure I heard that phrase before… At least it’s not in my active vocabulary. So, no connotations, positive or otherwise.

I completely lost my ability to do posts quickly: I start something, then wait (for time, inspiration, proper light to take a photo… I think I have posts started months ago :(

I like Iris Rebel, but won’t miss it once my travel spray is gone.

    • Excellent! Glad to add to your idioms Undina.

I’m not normally so quick but when a deadline calls…

Fair. There’s something about Iris Rebelle that really speaks to me in the first 30 minutes. I’m always a little swoony with it.

  6. I love Iris Rebelle, it is one of my most worn perfumes now (got a used 100 ml bottle for Christmas a year ago). Nothing rebellious about it, just very office friendly and easy to wear. I cannot find it on the brand’s site, so wonder if it isn’t one more of my favourites discontinued?

I have never heard the expression in the title of this post, in fact we don’t have a similar expression in Norwegian, which isn’t surprising. Cultural differences and all that.

I had to head over to Perfume Posse and read, I haven’t really read a lot of blogs for the longest time, thanks for the reminder! I still like blogs better than Insta/Meta.

      • Yes, I enjoyed reading over on PP again! I’m not sure I could share a flat, or even a house, with someone who isn’t family, but then most places here have only one bathroom. In Oslo the largest building society teamed up with researchers to do hands-on research in a new appartment building, to see what rooms/space different people are willing to share with neighbours. With the cost of flats being high, more people have to make do with less space, which isn’t really easy since we are used to entertain at home more than going out to restaurants.

  7. Never heard that phrase, but it’s a good one! I recommend Oliver Burkeman’s Time Management for Mortals – he says we simply have to let some stuff go because there will never be enough time in the day to do all that’s on our to-do list.
