Saturday Question: What Are Your Top 5 Winter Perfumes?

People might argue about when Winter starts or ends, but in the Northern Hemisphere, most would probably agree that now it is Winter. And just as we’ve long been done with the clothing uncertainties of the in-between seasons, we’ve probably fully switched to our cold-weather perfume wardrobe. So, what are you wearing this season?

Saturday Question #286:

What Are Your Top 5 Winter Perfumes?

Are these the same as in previous years (at least by your recollection), or have you promoted any of the previous runners-up or demoted former favorites?

My Answer

I’m making a conscious effort to wear perfumes more often, and I still need to rearrange my collection so that the bottles I want to reach for are easier to get to. But when it came to choosing five winter perfumes, it proved to be harder than I had expected.

I was briefly tempted to “cheat” by changing the question to Top 30 (I’m sure you know how that goes), but I forced myself to stop at five long-time favorites. So, in no particular order:

  • L’Artisan Parfumeur Tea for Two
  • Jo Malone Sweet Milk
  • Serge Lutens Fille en Aiguilles
  • Amouage Ubar
  • Teo Cabanel Alahine

All these perfumes have been my winter favorites for years. They might or might not have been “the top 5” in previous years, but they were definitely “top” something.

How about you?

  1. Right now I’m into Ambra Aurea, Amouage Lyric, 4160 Tuesdays Hush Hush, Hiram Green Slowdive and Encens Suave. Most recent winter scent acquisition is Fzotic Deixis, a labdanum scent.

  2. I have so many, and as I love spicy and amber perfumes, my collection skews toward colder weather options. Alahine is one of my favorites as well. I found one of the original pre formulation bottles on a facebook group and swapped away my gold bottle at one point. I also love SJP Stash (my “lucky” perfume); Nicolaï Sacrebleu Intense, L’Occitaine Eau des Baux, SL Ambre Sultan. Those might be my top 5, although Jungle L’Elephant and Ormonde Woman are top wears in winter too- just not as much as daily – I tend to save for date night.

  3. Winter is “my” perfume season. Big ol’ spiced, vanilla & amber concoctions with carnation heavy florals are all much loved.

    2. SL Ambre Sultan
    3. Kalemat by Arabian Oud
    4. EL Amber Ylang Ylang
    5. Vintage Terracotta Voile d’Été (No.25, Quand Vient l’Été) Guerlain

  6. Agree on heavier ones during winter. Jeroboam Vespero (leather musk), Atelier Materi Cacao Porcelana, Roos & Roos Oud Vibration (oud, rose, incense), Meo Fusciuni Little Song (coffee, rose, vetiver), and Le Labo Ylang 49 when a floral is called for.

  7. Winter perfumes are my favorite, especially since I’m a fan of chypres. I’ve been going old school this year. I guess I’m getting old and cranky, but I’m finally tired of the endless parade of new perfumes. (Check with me in a month, and the story will probably be different). So I’ve been turning to the perfumes I’ve owned forever. In cold weather (which we’re not getting much of in Texas so far) I love to wear Bond No 9 Andy Warhol Silver Factory, Clinique Wrappings, Guerlain Montaigne, Coco Chanel, and the old bottle of Dolce and Gabanna. There are more, but these are what come to mind immediately.

  8. I must admit that winter or cold weather perfumes are among my favorites. Out of the five perfumes you’ve listed, Undina, we share two of them. Can you guess which two?

    • Les Nombres d’Or Vanille – Mona di Orio
    • KL Homme – Karl Lagerfeld
    • Fille en aiguilles – Serge Lutens
    • Tea for Two – L’Artisan Parfumeur
