Saturday Question #13:
Do You Currently Own Any Back-up Bottles?
Most of us have SABLE (Stash Above & Beyond Life Expectancy – Vanessa ©) collections of perfumes, and, as much as we complain about the state of the industry, every year one way or the other we keep adding more perfumes than are being used up. So, chances of running out of any particular perfume are low – and still from time to time I hear about back-up bottles. Now, I’m curious how many of my readers currently have at least one back-up bottle in their possession.
A back-up bottle is defined as a produced by the brand bottle (of any size) that you have in addition to another bottle of the same perfume. It doesn’t count as a back-up if tor the same perfume you have an EdT, EdP, extrait and a “Poudre” flanker and wear all of them from time to time.
My Answer
Yesterday “back-ups” were on my mind. First, I read in hajusuuri’s post on Instagram, in which she mentioned having back-up bottles for two of Chanel perfumes.
Later that day I got a scare while reading one of the Roses de Mai Marathon’s posts on Serenity Now Scents and Sensibilities. Writing about one of my all-time favorites Ta’if by Ormonde Jayne (if you’re not familiar with this perfume, read her beautiful review; if you are – take a look at the wonderfully chosen illustrations), Old Herbaceous mentioned that she didn’t see it on OJ’s US website and thought that it was replaced by Ta’if Intensivo. Immediately I regretted not buying a back-up bottle of it when one of the sites recently had a sale. It was a false alarm, I confirmed since then that the original Ta’if is still available. But now I know that I’ll be on a look-out for the next sale to get that back-up bottle.
Other than that, I have multiple back-up bottles for my life-long love Lancome Climat and 4 more back-up bottles for perfumes that I really like and went 60-90% through the first bottle – Jo Malone Sweet Milk and French Lime Blossom, Yosh Ginger Ciao and Les Parfums de Rosine Rose d’Amour.

Another humdinger of a question!
I have a back-up bottle of the discontinued Cuir de Lancome precisely for that reason. I also have one for Passage d’Enfer because it was on sale, it is my favourite incense and you never know when they might change it. Finally I have 2 back-ups of Vol de Nuit Parfum because it is my holy grail.

I should probably finally buy VdN parfum – the first bottle, not a BU, not waiting for when I finish my current decant, because, you’re right, nobody knows when they might change it.

I am so ashamed of the number of backups I have! It’s a sort of obsession really – a fear that something I love might disappear so I have to ensure there is another (or several!) to keep me going in the future. It’s not just perfume either. Tea, pomegranate molasses, nightdresses, soap …. to name just a few items that I buy more of … just in case …. I blame it on my impoverished childhood and learning the habit from my mother who would buy two of each essential (like flour) to have one in reserve in case the money ran out.

I also tend to buy the things I like in “multiples” because I know from experience that I value variety much less then having something that I know and like for as long as I want to have it. I do it even with some clothes.

I’m also guilty of this Undina. I really like the stuff I like. The products have been found by trial and error to fit my needs perfectly. So I will always have an extra or two of the good stuff somewhere.

Well, I’m not sure you should: it’s not a rational behavior on our part. I doubt that in reality I’ll need Or be able to use up before they spoil all of the back-ups even for my “eternal love” perfume – let alone everything else. So, if you don’t feel a need to have back-ups, don’t even think about it any longer!

I have a current formulation of Reglisse Noire and the old formulation gifted to me by Portia and AnnieA. Not sure if that counts as a back up? I would say no because they aren’t exactly the same to my nose. I have an old travel spray of Heaven and two full size bottles. Definitely back up. My girls have a few back ups of their favorite d/c Pacificas that I bought for them, knowing that they were discontinued and would become harder to find. So I guess for myself personally only one fragrance as a backup.

I have one bub of Theo Fennel because it is discontinued and I got it cheap. I am still contemplating a bottle of Air de Rien before refirmulation kicks in

I wish brands issued warnings before they either discontinue or change composition of their perfumes. I don’t want to buy some perfumes in advance, but if I knew something goes away, I’d have bought it, even full price.

I have backups of discontinued favourites. JPG Fragile, two backups plus one backup of the shimmering body oil. Two DK Gold, plus two body lotions. Two AG Songes, though not discontinued these are the original bottle design. A few Fidji, not exactly sure of the number, all vintage. I’m sure there are others but they’re what spring to mind right now. I’m impressed with your Climat family. No fear whatsoever of running out of that😂

Ha! It’s not even close to all Climat that I have ;) After that picture was taken, Lancome released a limited edition of this perfume in Russia, and I’ve got a bottle of it. And I have a couple more back-up bottles of the La Collection re-release (bottles on the left). ;)

When I bought my bottle of Casablanca last year I had it sent to my friend in Arizona. My friend here was going there to visit so it was an opportunity I couldn’t miss. It travelled back with her, and had a few days in NY too.

I think, it’s a perfect setting for a perfume story or review, especially taking into consideration the name of perfume :) With a title somewhere along the line of the famous quote (“The beginning of a beautiful friendship” if to start with a sample story or “The continuation of a beautiful friendship” referring to your friend and a friend of a friend :) ).

I used to have a back up bottle of Cuir de Lancome too. On a whim I did a swap with Val, proving my tendency to live dangerously, as I only have a smidgen left now. ;) I think I have had one of Jasper Conran Woman in the past, and doubtless other things that I can’t recall on the spot!

Sorry for the scare, Undina, and thanks for the kind compliments about my post! It’s the UK website in England that only seems to list Ta’if Intensivo, except in the Travel Lab set that includes Ta’If. The US site does still sell regular Ta’if, thank goodness! But if the UK website doesn’t (and I can’t find it there other than the travel set), that makes me suspicious, and I’ll be looking to buy my first full bottle of it when the opportunity arises (i.e., a sale).
I have a few backup bottles: Penhaligon’s Ostara; VC&A’s Muguet Blanc; and Chanel No. 19 edt. Those are some of the scents I reach for regularly, when I’m not experimenting or going for glamor. I would call this a backup bottle, except it’s my only bottle and it’s huge: 200 ml of Chanel No. 22 edt. It is in fact my lifetime supply of No. 22, if I’m careful. I laughed out loud at your use of the phrase SABLE — yes, my fragrance collection will now outlive me, unless I start “deaccessioning” like a museum!

I think I should try to get a back-up for Chanel 19 EdT. It’s a little tricky though: I do not want the latest release, but Chanel is one of the most faked perfumes on eBay, so I’m hesitant to buy it from there.
If you come across a good (at least 20%) sale on OJ, please alert me: I do need to get that bottle. I’ll do the same if I find any sale.

I have 2 backups of Shangri La, my ultimate fave. I only have a smidge of my original bottle left so had to make sure I had more waiting in the wings. Then discontinuation so obvs had to back that up.
One backup of Dilettante, same reason.
I also have 2 backups of Chanel 19 extrait. I got these several years ago to hedge IFRA restrictions and I’m glad I did!

No backups mainly because my tiny collection (in perfumista terms) is split between two continents and I cant buy niche here. That being said I’m still annoyed I didnt get a backup of Pacificas Spanish Amber and I’m considering one of Parfum Sacre and potentially Passage d’Enfer. I also just bought a bottle of Dilettante because its sold out. Then there two discontinued ones from before I started this that one day I’d love to have: DK Chaos and Guerlains Vetiver Pour Elle.

In general, I think, it’s healthier the way you have it: as most of us acknowledge, we do not really need all those back-ups. So, if there is no one-two extremely special perfumes that you’re afraid to be without, don’t even think about BU bottles and keep discovering new loves instead of holding onto the old ones.

The thought of packing and moving bottles is a big deterrent 😬 that being said the Caron is definitely moving its way up the to buy list!

Well I had back up bottles of Un Lys and PdN’s Le Temps d’un Fete, but after going through my non back up bottles I had to open up and use my backups, so I guess they aren’t backups anymore. I also bought a couple of SSS faves when I heard she was going out of business and those are still actually backups but I will probably have to break into my back up of Jour Ensoleille soon, so that won’t be a back up anymore either. Oh, now I think about it, I’m still treasuring a couple of backups of Boyfriend and Tom Ford’s Violet Blonde, but only have a few drops left of my backup of Shanghi Lily. Good for you Gigi on grabbing Shangri La, I only have a few Highly Concentrated drops left of that one left. I got that one when he was still using the poof sprayer and the perfume did evaporate over time. What I have left is an amazingly intense sludge. I practically only need to think about putting some on and it still smells nuclear.

You are a living proof of the positive side of getting back-ups :)
About perfumes that became too concentrated: you could buy perfumer alcohol and try to dilute a little what you have. I did that with a couple of SSS perfumes, and it worked out great (though, in the current situation it might be difficult to get a hold of alcohol…).

I have zero backup bottles for my fragrances. If I heard they were discontinuing Prada Amber Pour Homme I would definitely snatch that endangered species for my future.
Otherwise there aren’t that many fragrances in my collection that I will need to restock. I think most of my bottles will disappear from my life forever once they’re thunked. I’m always curious to have something new rather than going back to something.

I think you should find a good deal on that perfume and buy it: I’m 98% certain it is already not the same as the one you’ve got, and in the next couple of years it’ll change even more. Since it’s one of your all-time favorites, one day you’ll be glad you bought a BU for it earlier.

I don’t have any back-up bottles…I guess it’s because I feel that as much as I love certain fragrances in my current collection, I haven’t found the one (or two) that I would be devastated if I ran out and it was no longer available. I did recently run out of Jo Malone’s Wild Bluebell – I had only bought the 30ml size before I discovered how much I enjoy wearing it alone or paired with another Jo Malone fragrance…Definitely purchasing a larger size bottle when I re-stock, but doubt I will buy a back-up bottle. Now, if we were talking about body creme/lotion, I am obsessed with that and have way more than any human should have – 2-3 bottles per location at various places around the house and in my purse and not to mention the stash of new bottles in the cabinet,

It looks like big stores – NM, Saks, Nordstrom – started running % off perfumes from time to time, which never happened before. So, if you keep an eye on them, sooner or later you’ll be able to buy Wild Bluebell with a 15-20% discount.

ugh-I do! When the Serge Lutens changes kicked in I bought three A La Nuit, three Daim Blond, and two Fille en Aiguille. And I had to stop myself recently from buying another Daim Blond. In the two years I’ve had them I’ve used about half a bottle of each. Remember the image of Marley’s chain, in A Christmas Carol? Sometimes I worried that that’s what I created. But I love perfume, and a lot of my bottles cost about $20 (not these SLs). But I have , I think, about 70 bottles and I’m 47 so I have more than enough to do me for life. I try not to have too many backup bottles. If something means a lot to me then yes-one bottle, plus one backup. After that I have to learn to love something new. Great question!

May I ask you the reasoning behind buying a BU Memo perfume? I realize, that the BU bottle means that you like this perfume and wear it more often than other. But how/why you decided to get the second bottle? Are you more than 50% down with your first bottle? Or was it a good deal? Or did you fear a reformulation or discontinuation?

I do like it and was wearing it a lot, then there was a 30% off sale! I live in fear of reformulation so I jumped on it! Then all this stuff happened (not just COVID-19) and I quit wearing it so much because I didn’t want to start associating that scent with this crazy ass time we are having. So maybe it wasn’t such a smart buy after all.

Excellent question… the two back ups that I still feel anxious of not having enough of are Guet Apens/ Attrape Coeur and Vol de Nuit. Having used up big amounts of these two I feel that a bottle + current bottle might just not be enough. I haven’t tried the new VdN edt recently, but love the vintage stuff so much. Ok back ups of the VdN Parfum too, and l’heure Bleue edt, après l’ondee edt, Mitsouko parfum ( but more by chance as they where sold together) Aroma Allegoria exaltant ( all in vintage formulations) and non Guerlain: vintage Rochas Femme Parfum de Toilette and – also a bit by chance but very happy for it – Alain Delon temp d’aimer, a fruity chypre in the Femme style.
I think that’s it. So more of a vintage thing I suppose, being scared of running out of things I know I can’t come by, rather than new perfumes that might get reformulated.
Of my more contemporary perfumes I don’t think I have any where I would be desperate if it was discontinued or reformulated, maybe De profundis ( I would like more of that one anyway, but a FB…) oh yes and Safran Troublant, maybe the two tubereuse by HdP number 1 og 3, one is a warm iris, and one a gorgeous animalic. Oh no, now look what you’ve done 😱

It was i think something I came by thanks to a kind parfumista with whom I swapped a bit, she send me some and I loved it, got one and later she stumbled upon a bottle and send that one too. It’s a beautiful perfume. Also it’s the parfum so it doesn’t take up much space 😉

I’m afraid if you keep thinking about the more contemporary part of your collection, you’ll fine more perfumes you don’t wish to disappear ;)
With each passing year I trust vintage perfumes less and less. Not just because of time. But since the modern (pre-Corona) perfume boom, vintage prices went up, without any guarantee that perfume is still usable. If I could smell some before buying, or if at least I had a reliable opinion that it’s still good from the seller who knows what they are talking about, I might be more inclined to buy those. But without that, bad perfume purchases upset me too much to enjoy the hunt.
I do want an older bottle of BdN parfum though…

Absolutely, prices for vintage now are ridiculous ( as for niche perfume) One can still be lucky, but as you say, one needs to calculate if it’s worth the risk. If you mean VdN parfum, I wouldn’t worry, in my experience it doesn’t easily go off, and if it has you can tell on the colour.

I have very few backups, mostly from TJ Maxx finds – SJP Covet, Bvlgari Omnia (original). Also SSS Equestrian which I bought when Laurie closed the shop. I don’t have any place to store backups so I haven’t made it a practice to seek them out. And I still haven’t used up an entire bottle of anything.

When I had less bottles, I did finish them and bought next. But these days, even when I don’t have a lot left, I tend to keep that bottle not finished, which isn’t smart but probably still smarter than buying the next full bottle just because I want to be able to wear that perfume once or twice per year :)

No backup bottles here, unless you count different versions of my favorite vintage perfumes, such as Bal a Versailles in edt, edc, perfume, and bath oil. I would rather spend my money on new loves rather than backups.

It’s a very healthy attitude! But are you sure you have enough of BaV to last you for life? It’ll be harder and harder to replenish that one as time goes. Just saying… ;)

It’s a lot :) You’re probably the first perfumista I “met” who likes Allesandro del’Acqua perfume. I went through the most of my bottle long time ago, and still keep the remaining part… I should probably try wearing it.
Do you have enough back-up of Sikkim? I think, I have an extra 25 ml splash bottle from the La Collection reissue (I bought the set for Climat), so I could pass it on you if you’d like).

Alessandro del’Acqua is not my typical perfume, nor is the Jessica McClintock but I do love them both. I think for the AdA, it’s the peony/musk dry down.
I don’t care for the new JMcC formula but the vintage is exquisite, green stemmy LOV with a touch of black currant.

Like quite a few people have mentioned already, I have a backup of Cuir de Lacome. I also have Tom Ford Violet Blonde, SL Fumerie Turque and also Interlude Man. Probably a few others but, I can’t think of them now. It is funny how I will never ever run out of perfume but yet, I feel the need to have extra bottles of some… clearly I’m not alone!

I envy your Violet Blond: I waited too long using the decant I bought – and then it was gone. I don’t understand this discontinuation.
Also, I’m curious about the Interlude. Why? Running low, found a good deal, or any other reason why you got it now?
BTW, speaking of Interlude: have you already tried the latest flanker? I like the original (and bought it for my vSO), and now I’m interested in this one (but not a blind-buy interested).

I would have had a backup of SL Five o’clock au Gingembre if I had known early enough about changes in bottle design. I have seen a few partial bottles for sale locally, but at nearly the same price I paid in 2013 for a 50 ml bottle (paid full price at a posh department store in Berlin, slightly less than what a bottle would go for in Norway). So running low, but no backup so far.

Yes! Yes! Yes! And I don’t just do this for perfumes. In this pandemic, I tend to have back ups for my refrigerator staples – eggs, egg whites, dairy creamer, leafy greens and tofu – in case I can’t get to or don’t feel like going to the grocery. (Don’t look at the tofu as me not eating meat – they are in the freezer.). Anyway, I digress, so let me get back to perfumes. Besides BUBs of Coromandel EDT, 28 La Pausa EDT, I also have back-ups for No.19 EDP, No.5 L’Eau, L’AP Safran Troublant and Tea for Two, Guerlain Cuir Beluga, Bvlgari Black and a bunch of Sonoma Scent Studio. I think I’m forgetting something but we’ll just leave it at that!

hajusuuri, can I please ask you about Safran Troublant? I love Olivia Giacobetti’s work, but I don’t want to smell like rice pudding. I don’t actually like rice, or pudding, and I don’t wan’t to smell like food. But I would like to smell like spice! Do you have any thoughts on this perfume you’d care to share? It seems to be loved, overall, in the reviews of it.

Food doesn’t count: even I now have a two-weeks’ supply of food in my fridge (never before in my life!).
I’m impressed by your BU collection, and now I think that I need to re-test No 5 L’Eau: if you like it so much that you have a BUB of it, maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention to it?

No backups, but I do look at what is on sale online locally of partial or even BNIB bottles. I am more tempted to buy semi-vintage bottles than backups for what I alredy have. This is partly because I think a lot of the citrus and green fragrances I like would not store very well and at the same time some classics are still not in my collection.

I love my Guerlain AA Pamplelune, but I have never kept a bottle of it for more than 5-6 years without finishing it. I’m just sceptical about keeping any citrus scents for too long. Orientals seem to store much better.

OK, Back Up bottles are my real shame. I went on a five year frenzy of buying vintage and discontinued Guerlain, CHANEL, Dior, YSL, Patou, Niki de Saint Phalle, Versace, Cacharel, Boucheron and others. When Liz Zorn was changing her line up I bought all of her Rosa sur Reuse that I could afford. When the Serge Lutens bottle changeover was happening I could have spent thousands but kept my head a little bit and only grabbed my very favourites.
I think about 1/4 of my collection are multiples.

Years ago I always had backup bottles. Whenever I have something new that I love I start thinking maybe I need a back up bottle.. but not, I no longer have back up bottles for a lot of reasons. The only one I have is Dzongkha, two of the old label. It will surely disappear if it hasn’t already (rumours and rumours of rumours abound).

For many years I haven’t even thought that it was necessary to have any back-ups: if anything, perfumes that I was wearing were getting cheaper by the time I needed the next bottle (because I could buy them online or at TJ Max). Little did I know that between two bottles of the same name perfumes were being cheapened not just by moving to discounters but also by reformulation. I still remember being surprised when the new bottle smelled differently compared to the old one. These days I don’t buy more BUBs only because I don’t expect to go through the most of my current bottles. But for some perfumes I want that assurance :)

Guilty but not crazy-guilty. All mine are SLs – Chergui, Fleurs d’Oranger, Tuberose Criminelle. I wear these A LOT. I wish I’d bought more backups before the reformulations.

I always thought so. I practically live in SLs. I’m close to finishing old Femininite du Bois and La Fille de Berlin. I just don’t feel like rushing out & buying FB replacements anymore.

I love the original Shiseido’s Feminite du Bois. I was a fragrance sales associate in the 1990’s when it was released and remember FdB and Angel causing quite the kurfluffle.

It seems that I am about 2 or 3 weeks behind in responding to the questions of the week! There’s been a lot going on!
I have only five back-up bottles, 2 of My Queen, by Alexander McQeen, a fragrance that I totally love, violet and iris deliciousness. I also have a backup of Guerlain Shalimar Initial and a backup of my signature, Heeley’s Iris de Nuit. Finally, I also have a backup of my favorite orange blossom scent, California Reverie by Van Cleef & Arpels. I had others, but I sold them. I’m not going to live long enough to use more than these!

Surprisingly, I don’t think I tried any of perfumes that you love enough to get a BU bottle (OK, I think I tried Guerlain flanker). Now I’m curious ;)
